About Dr. Kumar

Abhishek Kumar, MD, is a fellowship-trained specialist in spine surgery at Total Orthopedics Spine and Sports Medicine in Englewood, New Jersey. He is an expert in the diagnosis and management of both routine and complex disorders of the lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine.

He earned his Bachelor of Science in biological sciences from the University of Alberta in Edmonton and received his medical degree from the University of Calgary in Alberta. Upon graduating, Dr. Kumar completed his internship and residency at McGill University in Montreal, Quebec, and his fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital in New York City.

The focus of Dr. Kumar’s practice is minimally invasive spine surgery, and his treatment goals are to maintain motion in the spine when possible. Minimally invasive procedures are shorter in duration and use small incisions, so patients can often return home the same day. Recovery is easier, and patients are able to return to work and activities faster.

Dr. Kumar’s research focuses on developing and refining minimally invasive techniques, and he serves on the editorial board for multiple medical journals. His work has been published in major medical journals and has been frequently presented at national meetings and international conferences across Asia, Europe, and South America.

He is a member of the International Society for the Advancement of Spine Surgery, Young Surgeon Committee, Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and AO Spine. Dr. Kumar is also a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.
