Back Pain Q & A

What is back pain?

Back pain is a common medical problem that may develop from any number of causes and create various levels of discomfort. Though you may feel pain in any part of your back, it most often affects the lower back or lumbar spine.

The type of pain you feel may range from a dull ache to sharp shooting pain that may radiate into your arms or legs. Your back pain may be acute or chronic.

Acute back pain

Acute back pain often occurs after an accident or injury and causes discomfort that lasts no more than three weeks.

Chronic back pain

If your back pain lasts 12 or more weeks, then you have chronic back pain. You may develop chronic back pain following an acute injury, or it may develop from an underlying condition.

What causes back pain?

Back pain most often occurs from a mechanical problem that involves one or more of the structures that make up your back. Some of the most common causes include:

  • Sprains or strains
  • Herniated disc or slipped disc
  • Arthritis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Scoliosis
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Spinal fracture
  • Spinal trauma
  • Pinched nerve

Sciatica and radiculopathy are nerve conditions that may originate from problems in your spine. For example, a herniated disc is often the cause of sciatica.

How is back pain diagnosed?

At Total Orthopedics Spine and Sports Medicine, the team conducts a comprehensive evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your back pain.

During the exam, your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including when the pain started, the type of pain you feel, and the activities that worsen or alleviate your pain.

Your provider performs a physical exam and runs various diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, CT scans, or MRIs, to confirm or rule out a diagnosis to explain your back pain symptoms.

How is back pain treated?

Total Orthopedics Spine and Sports Medicine takes a team-based, patient-centered approach to care. Though skilled surgeons, the team maximizes non-operative care before recommending surgery.

Treatment for your back pain may depend on the underlying cause and may include:

  • Activity modification
  • Heat and ice
  • Anti-inflammatory medication
  • Pain medication
  • Physical therapy
  • Epidural steroid injections
  • Facet joint injections
  • Trigger point injections
  • Spinal cord stimulator

For your convenience, Total Orthopedics Spine and Sports Medicine has an on-site state-of-the-art physical therapy facility.

If non-operative treatments fail to relieve your back pain, the team at Total Orthopedics Spine and Sports Medicine may recommend spine surgery. Whenever possible, the team performs minimally invasive spine surgery to reduce your post-surgical pain and recovery time.
